In 2024, the volume of transit cargo transportation increased by approximately 2.5 times compared to 2019, rising from 5,723 thousand tons to 14,549 thousand tons. A sharp increase was particularly observed in 2022, with the volume rising by 65% compared to the previous year, reaching 11,930 thousand tons. From 2020 to 2024, the average annual growth rate has been around 17%.

Rail freight transportation on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway will become more intensive, Rovshan Rustamov, chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY), told Report. He noted that the BTK had not been operating for about a year: "From next year, more intensive freight transportation will be carried out through this railway line. An agreement has already been reached on the transportation of goods from China via the BTK."
