Development and growth of cargo transportation
Azerbaijan's transit freight sector has experienced impressive growth in recent years, solidifying the country's position as a vital transit hub between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Compared to 2019 and 2020 before the pandemic, the volume of transit operations increased by more than 65%.
Modernisation of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway
The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway project, initiated on November 27, 2007, and inaugurated on October 30, 2017, spans approximately 850 kilometers, with over 500 kilometers traversing Azerbaijani territory. Transhipment capacity of the BTK will increase to 5 million tons of cargo per year.
On August 8, 2025, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, signed a Joint Declaration following their meeting held in Washington, D.C.
