Development and growth of cargo transportation

Azerbaijan's transit freight sector has experienced impressive growth in recent years, solidifying the country’s position as a vital transit hub between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. From 2019 to 2023, Azerbaijan’s total transit freight volume has more than doubled, rising from 8.567 million tons to 17.433 million tons, marking a remarkable 103.5% increase. This growth spans across various transport modes, including rail, road, pipeline, air, and maritime freight.

Rail transport, a cornerstone of Azerbaijan’s trade network, saw an increase from 4.174 million tons in 2019 to 7.383 million tons in 2022, reflecting a 77% rise, and continues to play a critical role in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, linking China, Central Asia, and Europe. Road freight has experienced the fastest growth, surging by 357% from 1.373 million tons in 2019 to 6.520 million tons in 2023, demonstrating Azerbaijan's importance as a strategic point along the Middle Corridor connecting Asia to Europe.

Pipeline freight, essential for the transport of energy resources, grew from 2.836 million tons in 2019 to 4.005 million tons in 2023, underlining Azerbaijan’s pivotal role in the global energy market. While air freight has also seen growth, increasing from 176 thousand tons in 2019 to 292 thousand tons in 2021, supporting high-value, time-sensitive goods across borders. With ongoing investments in infrastructure, such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and Alat Port, Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its transport capabilities and remains a key player in global trade.

The country's strategic location, combined with its advanced infrastructure, positions it as an essential link in the global supply chain, driving economic growth and facilitating seamless trade between continents. As Azerbaijan continues to innovate and expand its transport networks, its role as a global transit hub will only grow, ensuring efficient and reliable connections for international markets.
