BAKU-TBİLİSİ-KARS RAİLWAY LİNE

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line was developed to strengthen transit traffic between Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, with the goal of establishing the Caucasus region as a key transportation corridor connecting Europe and Asia. The construction of the railway commenced on November 27, 2007, and it was officially commissioned in 2017. Spanning approximately 850 kilometers, the railway passes through 504 kilometers of Azerbaijani territory, 263 kilometers of Georgian territory, and 79 kilometers of Turkish territory. The operationalization of this railway line has been integrated with the Baku International Sea Trade Port and other related infrastructure, thereby enhancing the efficiency of cargo transportation.

After the completion of repair, restoration, reconstruction, and expansion work on the 184-kilometer section of the railway in Georgia, the annual cargo capacity has increased from 1 million tons to 5 million tons.

As the shortest and most reliable route linking Europe and Asia, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars line holds significant strategic value within the scope of China’s "Belt and Road" initiative and contributes to enhancing Azerbaijan’s logistical capabilities within the "East-West" transport corridor.

ZANGEZUR CORRIDOR

On August 8, 2025, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, signed a Joint Declaration following their meeting held in Washington, D.C.

The Declaration laid the foundation for the “International Trump Route for Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), which envisions the establishment of an uninterrupted transport connection between the main part of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Within this initiative, the Zangezur Corridor will become a new and crucial segment of both the Middle Corridor and the North–South Transport Corridor. The TRIPP will serve as a strategic transport link connecting Asia and Europe, expanding international freight transit capacities, and contributing to the integration of regional countries into global supply chains.

The “Trump Route for Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) will connect to the Horadiz–Agbend railway on the Azerbaijan–Armenia border and extend to Nakhchivan, thereby ensuring access to Turkey and Europe. The line is designed to carry 5.5 million passengers and 15 million tons of cargo annually. Thus, the Zangezur Corridor, as an integral part of the East–West and North–South transport links, will significantly enhance the region’s transit potential alongside the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars corridor.

Construction of the Horadiz–Agbend Railway

As a key component of Eurasia’s transport connectivity, the design and construction of the Horadiz–Agbend railway, forming part of the Zangezur Corridor, is being implemented in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 2534 of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 13, 2021.

The total length of the railway is 110.4 km along the main line and 140.6 km including sidetracks. The line is single-track, and construction and installation works are being carried out in three phases:

  • ●  Phase I (Horadiz–Soltanli, 30 km):

Clearance of mines, demolition and design works, earthworks, installation of superstructure elements, and construction of engineering structures.

  • ●  Phase II (Soltanli–Mincivan, 55 km):

Clearance of mines, design and demolition works, earthworks, installation of superstructure elements, and construction of engineering structures.

  • ●  Phase III (Mincivan–Agbend, 25.4 km):

Clearance of mines, design and earthworks, and construction of engineering structures.
